John Lowther, 1st Viscount Lonsdale

Viscount Lonsdale was a hereditary British title of nobility , created once each in the Peerage of England and in the Peerage of Great Britain .

Awards, subordinate and other titles

For the first time the title was bestowed on May 28, 1696 in the Peerage of England to the House of Commons and former First Lord of the Admiralty Sir John Lowther, 2nd Baronet . Along with the Viscount title, he also received the subordinate title of Baron Lowther . Both titles expired when the 3rd Viscount died on March 12, 1751.

The second award was created on May 24, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain for Sir James Lowther, 5th Baronet . This was a great uncle of the 3rd Viscount's first award and had already inherited the baronet from him. Together with the Viscountcy, this was also awarded the titles of Earl of Lonsdale , Viscount Lowther , Baron Lowther , Baron of the Barony of Kendal and Baron of the Barony of Burgh . When it became clear that he would have no offspring, he was awarded the title Viscount Lowther and Baron Lowther in the Peerage of Great Britain on October 26, 1797 , both with the special note that they were also passed on to his cousin, Rev. Sir William Lowther , 1st Baronet , are inheritable. On his death in 1802, the Earldom and his other titles from 1784 expired, his titles awarded in 1797 fell to his cousin according to the special note.
