For the first time, the title Earl of Lonsdale , in the County of Westmorland and the County Palatine of Lancaster for Sir James Lowther, 5th Baronet , was created on May 24, 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain . Along with the Earldom, he was given the subordinate titles Viscount Lonsdale , Viscount Lowther , Baron Lowther , of Lowther in the County of Westmorland, Baron of the Barony of Kendal in the County of Westmorland, and Baron of the Barony of Burgh in the County of Cumberland , awarded. When it became clear that he would have no offspring, he was awarded the titles Viscount Lowther , of Whitehaven, and Baron Lowther , of Whitehaven, in the Peerage of Great Britain on October 26, 1797 , both with the special note that they were also at whose cousin, Rev. Sir William Lowther, 1st Baronet , are inheritable. On his death in 1802, the Earldom and his other titles from 1784 expired, his titles awarded in 1797 fell to his cousin according to the special note.
This very cousin, now 2nd Viscount Lowther, was raised to Earl of Lonsdale , in the County of Westmorland, on April 7, 1807 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom . Today's title holder is his descendant Hugh Lowther as 8th Earl.
