Viscount of Galmoye

Viscount of Galmoye , in the County of Kilkenny , was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Ireland .

The family seat of the Viscounts was Galmoy Castle ( Irish Caisleán Ghabhalmhaí ) in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

Award and history of the title

The title was created on May 16, 1646 by King Charles I for Sir Edward Butler .

His great-grandson, the 3rd Viscount, fought for the overthrown King James II after the Glorious Revolution and followed him into exile in France in 1691. He was declared an outlaw in 1691 and ostracized by parliament in 1697 , with which his titles and lands were confiscated from the crown.

His nephew and heir James Francis Richard Butler († 1771) and his heirs after him continued to use the Viscount title in French exile.
