Visual Studio One ( The newspaper for the Microsoft Developer Community ) was a trade magazine for software developers . It has been published every two months since the first edition in 06/2005 (October) and presented articles on development with Microsoft technologies. The publisher was the IT training provider ppedv, based in Burghausen , Upper Bavaria.

History and format

Visual Studio One was a hybrid of newspaper and magazine formats . Since the first edition at the end of 2005, the magazine has undergone two redesigns, through which it has increasingly supplemented its magazine features with typical newspaper features.

Since the last issue, number 67, was published in October 2017, it is no longer possible to subscribe to the magazine.

Issues 06/2005 to 06/2007

From the first edition in 06/2005 to the last one in 2007, the magazine appeared in the conventional A4 magazine format with a glossy cover.

Issues 01/2008 to 06/2009

With the 01/2008 issue, the publisher switched to issuing the magazine in an oversized format and with a new layout. Here, the influences of the newspaper format became apparent for the first time: Instead of a full-page title image, the cover presented article teasers in newspaper style in addition to the headlines. The interior layout was reduced from three to two columns of text.

Edition 01/2010 to 10/2017

At the beginning of 2010, Visual Studio One underwent its last redesign to date. The oversize remained. Typically for newspapers, the interior layout was made more flexible and color-coded in breaks. The most significant changes were made to the cover: From now on, the logo bar was placed vertically on the left, the headlines and teasers were distributed in three columns and a preview of the comic following the table of contents was added.

Content

The range of topics covered software development with Microsoft technologies. According to the cover, these included " .NET , Microsoft Visual Studio , C # , Team System, Visual Basic , Phone, Windows Presentation Foundation , SharePoint , Internet Explorer , Microsoft SQL Server , Microsoft Silverlight and Windows Communication Foundation ". Topic overviews of the current and the upcoming issue were regularly available on the homepage.

Comic

Since issue 01/2010, Visual Studio One has been the only developer magazine in German-speaking countries to have a comic. The main character of the comic was the magazine's mascot, "DOT.NERD". This encountered personalities from the developer scene in the various editions. Ralf Westphal and Stefan Lieser from the Clean Code Developer Initiative and Jan Schenk and Cortessa Kostis from msdn tv were there.
