Vogrie House

Vogrie House is a mansion near the Scottish village of Pathhead in the Midlothian Council Area . In 1979 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The name Vogrie is derived from the Gaelic Bhog Chrioch ("swampy borderland") and was first mentioned in 1337. Later belonging to the Barony of Crichton , James Dewar acquired the land in 1719 , and his descendants still hold parts of it today. In the 1750s, the family also acquired the lands of the neighboring Stobbs , which were rich in natural resources. Among other things, coal was mined there until 1938. The rambling parks were laid out in the early 19th century.

Today's Vogrie House was built in 1876 to plans by the Perth architect Andrew Heiton . James Cumming Dewar was the last dewar to live in the mansion. After his death in 1908, his widow sold the house in 1928. It was transferred to an Edinburgh hospital, which established a care facility for nervous disorders there. From 1963 the British military used Vogrie House as a communication base for the Cold War . A police base was later housed there. Currently, Vogrie House is the headquarters of the Midlothian Ranger Service . The park was opened to the public in 1980.

description

The Vogrie House, designed in the historicizing Scottish Baronial style , is located in the midst of an extensive park around 1.5 km southwest of Pathhead. Its lands border those of Oxenfoord Castle to the north . The Tyne limits it to the west . Vogrie House is made of sandstone that has been processed into layered masonry. The northwest-facing front of the two- to three-story mansion is designed asymmetrically. The entrance tower protruding roughly in the middle with its conical roof and the conspicuously ornamented woodwork on the overhanging gables are striking.
