Volkshilfe Lower Austria
The People's Aid Lower Austria as part of the organization Volkshilfe Austria a non-profit association, which with its operating company service man GmbH with more about 1,600 full-time employees one of the largest nonprofit organizations in Austria counts. Around 2,000 volunteers and officials, over 7,000 members and numerous company partners support the work of the organization.

The aim of the association is to help, support and accompany people in a contemporary way in order to improve, preserve and support their living situations. This is to give people the chance to participate in social life and to be an integral part of society.
history
Volkshilfe NÖ was founded on August 1, 1947, after predecessor organizations (e.g. Societas) had been socially active for decades. People in need, war victims and refugees, starving mothers and children were cared for. Food, clothing and fuel were distributed and recreational vacations were organized. District associations and numerous local groups were set up in all districts. As a result, warming rooms, senior citizens' clubs, childcare facilities, etc. a. m. built.
The organization had to carry out its first tests at the following major events:
- 1954 flood disaster on the Danube in Lower Austria
- 1956 refugees from Hungary
- 1968 refugees after the crackdown on the Prague Spring
Initially, most of the social work was only carried out by volunteers, but from the 1970s onwards a company was set up with full-time employees who look after people at home. In the first few years the numbers were still modest, initially 34 and later 92 social workers cared for around 300 patients.
Due to the dynamic growth, the prerequisites for a comprehensive network of social medical services were created and regulated by law in 1979 by the state of Lower Austria.
From the beginning of the 1980s, the organization offered further childcare services and carried out labor market policy projects. The introduction of the care allowance in Austria at the federal level in 1993 accelerated the development of Volkshilfe as social medical support.
In 2001, due to the expansion of the services and the number of employees, the general meeting decided to convert the non-profit association into a non-profit company with limited liability called Service Mensch GmbH .
