The main characters of the series are the two eight-year-old school children Mats (originally Nate ) and Malika. They go to school together every morning. Although they always start in such a way that they would arrive on time, they never make it because they are always held up by a variety of bizarre situations along the way. On their way, the two encounter, for example, monsters, aliens, robots, pirates or carnivorous plants. As a result, Mats and Malika arrive late at school every day, where they are received by the headmistress Strengelmeier, who, however, does not believe their adventurous stories.
