Full face mask
The full face mask or full face mask is a special form of diving mask .
In contrast to the regular diving mask, which only covers the nose and eyes, the full face mask covers the entire face and thus protects against environmental influences. The regulator is usually attached to the mask. Most masks have special devices to equalize pressure through the nose. Inner masks or purge air largely prevent the lens from fogging up. Communication via radiotelephone is also made possible, but alternating breathing is made difficult or impossible without an octopus . The division of the dead spaces within the mask are different in number and structure depending on the manufacturer and construction principle.
The full face mask is the essential form of diving mask for professional diving , but is also used for technical diving , ice diving and diving in polluted or cold waters and increasingly also by recreational divers . Diving in sewage treatment plants , for example, is impossible without a helmet diving device or a full face mask.
The full face masks, which were developed early on, are optional and to this day, both technically and historically:
- a conversion of regular military or commercial gas masks ,
- a larger version of the regular diving mask with a side-mounted regulator,
- a variation of the modern light diving helmet , as a full face mask with a rigid front part and multiple, rather coarse straps or spiders,
- In-house constructions or varieties and mixed forms of the previous three points.
The Rouquayrol-Denayrouze diving device could be used with a full mask from 1864/65. This was probably the first application of this type of mask, which was also a commercial success.
The full face snorkel mask remained an episode in technical development. This was a diving mask that covered the entire face, but instead of a regulator, one or even two snorkels were firmly attached . Because of the large dead space there was a great risk of pendulum breathing , which could lead to the wearer fainting. Recently, the Tribord company re-launched a full face snorkel mask.
