The Von Behring-Röntgen-Stiftung was established on September 8, 2006 by the State of Hesse as a foundation under civil law. It promotes university medicine at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen and the Philipps University of Marburg .

With a foundation capital of 100 million euros, the interest income from which is used for funding, it is one of the largest medical foundations in Germany. It was founded in the course of the merger of the university clinics in Gießen and Marburg in 2005 and the subsequent privatization in 2006, with the aim of opening up new perspectives for university medicine at both locations. The Von Behring Roentgen Foundation is based in the Marburg Landgrave Castle .

tasks and goals

The purpose is to promote research and teaching at the medical departments of the Justus Liebig University in Gießen and the Philipps University of Marburg . The Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation supports

  • Joint projects by scientists from Marburg and Giessen
  • Individual projects by young researchers who are no more than 35 years old
  • Symposia and conferences as well
  • the next generation of academics with scholarships for high school graduates, Germany scholarships and travel grants

In addition, the foundation regularly awards Von Behring-Röntgen prizes for young researchers in recognition of outstanding achievements in medical research and Von Behring-Röntgen research medals to honor the lifetime achievements of scientists in medicine.

Funded projects

Since its establishment, the foundation has approved around 20 million euros for over 110 medical and biomedical research projects and for the work of excellent scientists (as of 2019).

A wide range of topics is funded, e. B. with projects in the field of cancer and lung research and virology.

organization

The foundation board includes the former Federal Minister Friedrich Bohl as President and the Marburg virologist Hans-Dieter Klenk and the Giessen ophthalmologist Prof. Dr. Birgit Lorenz.

The board is supported by a scientific advisory board made up of 16 medical experts. He advises the foundation on all technical matters, in particular the use of the foundation's income for research funding.

A board of trustees monitors compliance with the founder's wishes and advises the foundation board on fulfilling the foundation's purposes. The Hessian Minister for Science and Art, Angela Dorn-Rancke, chairs the Board of Trustees of the Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation .

Netter Endowment Fund

The married couple Karl-Joachim Netter and Petra Netter set up a trust foundation with a capital of 50,000 euros under the umbrella of the foundation . The Netter Foundation Fund supports scientific projects, awards grants, grants material resources and promotes international scientific exchange.
