The West Indies coincides with a large part of South Asia and roughly corresponds to the present-day territories of Pakistan , Nepal , Bhutan , Bangladesh , India , Sri Lanka and Myanmar . The Indian subcontinent completely encompasses the Indian subcontinent without coinciding with it.

The expression “front India” referred to the front part of the area understood as Indian from a European point of view. The part behind it was called Back India . They continued to speak of the island of India , but the term is out of date.
