Drift angle

The windward angle or lead angle , engl. Wind Correction Angle WCA , is the correction angle for a vehicle to maintain a given course . Usually the drift angle corresponds to it , referred to as DA in the drawing .

In the picture an airplane is drifting leeward. To stop the drift, the pilot turns the aircraft to windward. If he reduces the course error angle TKE to zero, he stays on course. Then the drift angle and windward angle are identical. The constant deviation from the map course is called cross deviation XTK .

Vehicles on the ground are referred to as the slip angle.
