Foreman (sea rescue)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vormann is the traditional name of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) for the leading crew member on one of their lifeboats . The foreman or the first foreman is basically the superior of all crew members of a DGzRS unit and the head of a DGzRS station. The work of the foreman is comparable to that of a captain .

Because of the shift work on the sea rescue cruisers , which are manned by permanent crews, there are several foremen who are responsible for the operations. A distinction is therefore made between the 1st and 2nd foreman and possibly 3rd foreman.

The term foreman comes from the early days of sea rescue when the lifeboat crews consisted only of volunteers. As a rule, they themselves were captains, pilots or fishermen who knew the dangers of seafaring from their own experience or personal experience. It therefore made sense to choose the "neutral" designation foreman for whoever was in command of the boat .
