The Vulpius Clinic in Bad Rappenau is an orthopedic-surgical specialist clinic with a focus on hip and knee arthroplasty, hand surgery, shoulder surgery, foot and ankle surgery, conservative orthopedics & special pain therapy and pediatric orthopedics. The clinic, which opened on June 16, 1912, has been the academic teaching hospital of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg since 1999 .

history

The clinic was founded by Oskar Vulpius as a private hospital for bone, joint and glandular diseases. Vulpius decided on the location in Rappenau because the brine there from the Rappenau saltworks and the fog-free air seemed to him beneficial for the healing success. In 1911, Vulpius received the 152 ares in Engeloch needed to found the clinic free of charge from the community. At that time, the site was about 500 meters northwest of the village, and the community also took over the sewer system and road construction. The more recent development has now closed the gap between the place and the clinic. Construction of the sanatorium began on August 28, 1911. The first sick people moved into the Solbad Rappenau sanatorium on May 27, 1912 ; the official opening took place on June 16, 1912. The facility initially focused on the treatment of bone tuberculosis, which was very common in Germany at the time . The preserved old building still shows the structure of a clinic for bone tuberculosis: large, south-facing balconies, as it was believed that air, sun and food brought tuberculosis to a cure. In addition to large sun terraces, the Vulpius Clinic had its own graduation tower until the 1930s .

During the First World War , a club hospital of the Red Cross, which was subordinate to the Heidelberg reserve hospital, was set up in the Vulpius Clinic, and founder Vulpius was then promoted to chief medical officer. In 1925, Vulpius gave up his Heidelberg private clinic, which had been running until then, and devoted himself entirely to the clinic in Rappenau, which received the title of baths in 1930. After Vulpius' accidental death in 1935, Gerhard Pusch took over the clinic in 1937.

In 1952 the clinic had 165 beds. In 1955 the name Vulpius Klinik GmbH was adopted . After the graduation tower to the west of the clinic was demolished in 1956, the west extension, inaugurated on June 21, 1958, was erected in its place.

Over time, the spectrum changed from conservative to surgical orthopedics. In 1976 the clinic, which now had 165 beds, was converted into a GmbH. On February 10, 1981, the construction of a new operating wing began. The first operation was carried out in the new rooms on July 27, 1982, before the new operating wing was officially inaugurated on March 4, 1983.

In 1997 the Vulpius Klinik acquired the private gynecological clinic Dr. Reinhard in Heilbronn, which was sold in 2005.

From the year 2000 the clinic went through an economic crisis. The expansion and expansion of the specialist departments carried out in 2003 led to a consolidation. From May 2002 the specialization of the range of services for operative interventions began. In 2004 a third operating room was built for an investment of 3.2 million euros and an outpatient operation center (AOZ) in 2006 for around 1 million euros. In 2006 the clinic was expanded to include a department for shoulder and elbow surgery, and in 2009 a department for endoprosthetics. In 2007, a total of 4408 inpatients were treated in 135 beds. 4,217 patients were treated in the outpatient area. In 2007 there were 212 employees. In 2008 the company achieved sales of around EUR 20 million. In 2012 a new ambulance area was built for around 2.6 million euros.

Architecturally, the old clinic building is a relevant building in the city of Bad Rappenau. The cityscape when approaching from the south-west is largely shaped by the building, although numerous additions since the 1980s have only vaguely revealed the original shape of the clinic.
