Dictionary entry

A dictionary entry is the smallest independent unit of a dictionary in linguistics and terminology . The entry is made up of the keyword and the assigned entry information .

In the context of standardization within the general theory of terminology, dictionary or technical dictionary is the superordinate technical term for reference works, which are also generally referred to as lexicon , encyclopedia and glossary .

As part of the dictionary entry, the keyword is a vocabulary element that is used to classify and locate the entry. In this context, a lemma is a keyword that is noted in its basic form.

Entry information

The entry information is that part of the dictionary entry that is assigned to the headword as the explicit information. The type of information is diverse, it can consist of language-related or factual explanations. For example, the specification of paraphrases , definitions , synonyms and antonyms , notes on use in the sense of classification in a subject, reproduction of short forms and long forms as well as foreign-language equivalents or references. The way in which the entry information is provided depends on the aim and purpose of the dictionary. Depending on the predominant type of information, a distinction is made between a language dictionary or a subject dictionary , a monolingual dictionary or a multilingual dictionary .
