The WMMT Jamboree was an American country show broadcast by WMMT radio station in McMinnville , Tennessee .

history

The idea of the jamborees came from Pleas Taylor, who submitted the proposal to Roy Crocket, head of the radio station WMMT. Given the popularity of the Barn Dance shows, Crocket agreed to organize such a show. However, since the station's studio was too small to hold a show with an audience and there was no suitable auditorium nearby, an open-air stage was set up in an open field. Similar to a drive-in movie viewers could with their vehicles now faces the stage go and look at the show. Ray Hill, member of the Hill Family, recalls: “ People for miles around would drive their cars and park them on the lawn facing the stage. Some sat in their cars watching while others brought lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. “The first WMMT Jamboree took place in 1954.

Three groups made up the core of the show: the Hill Family, the Smilin 'Hillbillies and the Taylor Brothers. The show was hosted by Pleas Taylor, who played bass and was already a member of Eddie Hill's band . Since the weather did not meet the requirements of the Jamborees all year round, the live shows had to be stopped in autumn and winter. The artists therefore had to broadcast from the small studio. In spring and summer the show was moved back to the open-air stage.

The WMMT Jamboree was on the air until 1960, but was discontinued because of its decreasing popularity.
