WNCW is a public radio station based in Spindale , North Carolina . The "Listener Supported" station belongs to the Isothermal Community College and broadcasts a program of folk, blues, jazz, reggae, Celtic, world music, rock, bluegrass, indie and a news program.
The WNCW shows from "Studio B" are known for their bluegrass sessions. Recordings for the regular program are made in the broadcasting studio; some of them are compiled in the annual “Crowd Around The Mic” album and released on CD. These recordings are only published for listeners who support WNCW. The live video recordings that WNCW publishes on Youtube are also known. The station broadcasts a lot of bluegrass and gospel, especially on Sundays. The “This Old Porch” program celebrates the region's storytelling and bluegrass tradition.
The station reaches large parts of North Carolina with its VHF transmitter on Clingman's Peak near Mount Mitchell . The transmitter emits 17.5 kW from a height of 2022 meters. WNCW is also broadcast by WSIF Wilkesboro and four translators. WNCW is partly heard in South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Virginia by means of the broadcaster.
