Waalse Kerk (Middelburg)
The Waalse Kerk ( German Walloon Church ) was a Gothic church in a begarden yard in Middelburg ( province of Zeeland ) in the Netherlands .
history
The Middelburg branch of the Begarden was founded before 1271. The Begarden Church was first mentioned in a will of the Aleid of Holland from October 18, 1271. In 1492 the Begardenhof was badly damaged by fire, but it was completely restored. In the course of the Reformation , the monastery buildings were secularized and a brewery and stables were set up in them. In 1575, the church , built in the form of a basilica , was taken over by the Reformed Walloon Community of Middelburg, which eventually owned it until the Second World War . In 1656 an organ was installed for the first time. On May 17, 1940, shortly after the bombing of Rotterdam , the church was completely destroyed by a German bombardment. After the congregation had used the Doopsgezinde Kerk in Middelburg since the end of the war, their services are now taking place in the Engelse Kerk .
