The Engelse Kerk ( German  English Church ) is a late Gothic chapel in Middelburg ( Zeeland ) in the Netherlands .

history

The chapel was originally built between 1471 and 1484 as a sacred building for the Cellebroeders ( Alexians ) monastery. After the abolition of the monastery and the introduction of the Reformation in Middelburg, the chapel was initially used as a carpet factory. From 1629 the building found a sacred purpose again as the chapel of the community of English merchants in the city. Hence the name of the sacred building, which is still used today, as Engelse (= English) church. Today, in her worship of the Walloon community will take place after the original place of worship of the community, Waalse Kerk , 1940 by a bombardment had been destroyed.

The monastery building, the so-called Simpelhuis , was used from 1611 as a monastery to accommodate the mentally ill , and in 1816 a public soup kitchen moved in. Today the parish of the Reformed Parish in Middelburg is located in the building.

organ

The organ was built in 1761 by the organ builder Steevens. The mechanical grinding loading -instrument has 9 registers on a Manual (Prestant (D) 8 ', the hollow flute 8', Prestant 4 ', Flute 4', fifth, 3 ', Octave 2', Tertian 1 3 / 5 ', Cornet IV, Dulcian 8 ′) and an attached pedal (C – d 1 ).
