The cap binding complex (CBC), more precisely the nuclear cap binding complex (NCBC), is a protein complex consisting of two subunits that binds to the 5'-cap structure of the resulting mRNA in the nucleus of eukaryotes . The binding of CBC stabilizes the RNA and protects it from the removal of the m 7 G-Cap; in addition, after the end of the transcription, it leads to the poly-A tail entering into a bond, and so the RNA is cyclized and offers even less surface to attack. Furthermore, the CBC is indispensable for the process of splicing and transport from the cell nucleus to the endoplasmic reticulum . The CBC in metazoa consists of the subunits CBP20 and CBP80, the naming was based on the molecular mass of 20 kDa and 80 kDa, respectively. In yeast the subunits are called CBC1 and CBC2.
In addition to the functions mentioned, mRNA is protected from degradation by poly-A-specific ribonuclease by binding to CBC even during the first round of translation .
