The weapons license in Austria a proof of proficiency in the trained and proper handling of weapons. In contrast to the weapon possession card or the weapon passport , it does not authorize the possession of firearms .

The basis for the gun license is in § 5 of the second Gun Act Implementation Ordinance (also called "2. WaffV"), which regulates the proper handling of firearms. The law reads literally:

§ 5. (1) In the procedure for issuing a weapon law certificate, the authority must convince itself whether the applicant is likely to handle firearms properly; the same applies when checking the reliability (Section 25 WaffG). In addition to proof of constant use as a service, hunting or sporting weapon, the confirmation of a trader who is authorized to trade in non-military weapons, according to which the person concerned is also - in practice - can be considered as evidence of the ability to handle weapons properly. Has been trained in handling (his) weapons within the last six months.

The law stipulates that the authorities must have proof of the proper handling of the weapon by the owner before issuing a weapon pass or a weapon possession card. Police officers, judicial officers and professional soldiers can demonstrate proper handling by showing their ID card, sport shooters by regularly participating in shooting events, and hunters by showing their valid hunting card.

The gun license is usually required by people who cannot prove the constant use of their gun (s), e.g. B. Gun collectors . It can be acquired in the course of a short theoretical and practical training by an authorized arms dealer or by an instructor . Its validity for submission to the authorities is six months. It must therefore be renewed practically every time a weapons check is carried out.
