The Edirne Armistice , also known as the Adrianople Armistice , was a ceasefire agreement between the then Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire , which was signed on January 19 . / January 31, 1878 greg. was signed in the city of Edirne (Adrianople). Through this agreement, the hostilities of the Russo-Turkish War 1877–1878 were declared over and the Ottoman Empire asked for the conclusion of a peace treaty. On March 3, 1878, the peace treaty of San Stefano was signed in the town of San Stefano . The then San Stefano, located 200 km east of Edirne, was practically a suburb of Istanbul. Today it is called Yeşilköy and is a quarter of Istanbul's Bakırköy district , which is also where Istanbul Ataturk Airport is located.

The ceasefire agreement made clear reference to the Conference of Constantinople and the borders of an independent Bulgaria drafted there. In the ceasefire agreement and the subsequent treaty, Bulgaria was granted all territories in which a majority of Bulgarians lived. In addition, the Ottoman Empire had to recognize the state independence of Romania, Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria. It also ceded the province of Kars to the Russian Empire. This agreement formed the basis for the San Stefano Peace Treaty.
