Election to the House of Representatives in the Ottoman Empire 1877

General elections were held in the Ottoman Empire in 1877 . It was the first choice in the country's history.

Preliminary electoral regulations were passed on October 29, 1876, which stated that elected members of the provincial councils would elect the members of the first parliament of the Ottoman Empire . On December 24th, the first Ottoman constitution was promulgated , which prescribed a bicameral parliament with an appointed Senate and an elected Chamber of Deputies .

The candidacy was restricted to men over 30 years of age who were able to speak the Ottoman language and who had full civil rights. Reasons for being excluded from the election were dual citizenship, work for a foreign government, personal bankruptcies , work as a servant or "being notorious for shameful deeds".

Result and aftermath

Parliament met on March 19, 1877 and was suspended on June 28. New elections were held later in the same year for a parliament, which met in December.
