Waipu Caves

The Waipu Caves are caves located near Waipu in the Whangarei district of the Northland region on the North Island of New Zealand . A larger colony of "glow worms" ( Arachnocampa luminosa ) lives in the caves .

The area is under protection as the Waipu Caves Scenic Reserve and is accessible by a hiking trail, the approximately 2 km long Waipu Caves Track, from a parking lot created by the Department of Conservation (DOC). This can be reached by car from SH 1 via Shoemaker Road. For the accessible caves there are organized tours from various providers.
