2.5 km Waitakere Reservoir Dam

The Waitakere Tramline is still 2.5 km narrow gauge - works railway in the Waitakere Ranges in Swanson southwest of Auckland in New Zealand , the maintenance of the dam and the water line to the Upper Nihotupu reservoir for the construction and has been used for the 1907th It was also used by the Waitakere Tramline Society Inc. for tourist excursions until 2014, but these were discontinued due to a risk assessment.

location

The track with an original gauge of 762 mm (2 feet 6 inches ), which later on 610 mm (2 feet) umgespurt was originally started at the station Swanson and led to a stop above the filter plant. From there it still leads to the dam of the Waitakere Reservoir. The lower part of the railway line from Swanson to the filter system was dismantled around 1927.

Rail vehicles

One of the locomotives was built in 1976, overhauled in 1985 and, during the second overhaul in 2000, it was equipped with a 16 hp Kubota diesel engine and a variable hydraulic drive. Most of the cars were built in 1978 and modernized in the 1990s to allow for a smoother and more comfortable ride.

Damage and cessation of excursion traffic

In November 2011, a leak in the main Watercare main line with a diameter of 600 mm led to considerable undercutting, which damaged a 15 m long section of the nearby light rail line, whereupon the track hung freely in the air for a length of 6 m. The route was then closed to tourist traffic since November 24, 2014, but can still be used by its owner Watercare for the maintenance of the dam and the pipeline. Parts of the track can be seen from the Waitakere Tramline Loop Track , which follows the old light rail line through some of its tunnels.
