Wajeha al-Huwaider
Wajeha al-Huwaider ( Arabic وجيهة الحويدر, DMG Waǧīha al-Ḥuwaidar ; * 1962 or 1963) is a Saudi Arabian writer and women's rights activist. She is co-founder of the Association for the Protection and Defense of Women's Rights in Saudi Arabia .
Al-Huwaider supported the appointment of the first Saudi Arabian Deputy Minister for Education, Norah al-Faiz, and called for women's rights to be expanded. In 2008 she gained international media attention when a video of her protesting against the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia, in which she drives a car in Saudi Arabia, appeared on YouTube . In 2011 she filmed Manal al-Sharif during an action against the Saudi ban on women driving. As a result, the women's rights situation in Saudi Arabia gained international attention.
According to her own statements, a stay in the USA influenced her to get involved as a women's rights activist:
"Before that, I knew that I'm a human being. However, in the United States I felt it, because I was treated as one. I learned life means nothing without freedom. Then I decided to become a real women's rights activist, in order to free women in my country and to make them feel alive. "
On June 15, 2013, Fawzia al-Oyouni and Huwaider were sentenced by a court to a ten-month prison term with an additional two-year travel ban for attempted kidnapping for trying to help Canadian Nathalie Morin escape her abusive Saudi husband and bring her into the country rescue canadian embassy.
