Manal al-Sharif ( Arabic منال الشريف, DMG Manāl aš-Šarīf ; Born April 25, 1979 in Mecca , Saudi Arabia ) is a Saudi IT consultant who worked for Aramco . She became known for her commitment to the right to drive a car as a woman in Saudi Arabia. She claims this right in her “Woman2Drive” campaign .

Life

After childhood, Sharif studied computer science with two siblings in a strict home in Jeddah and then worked as one of the first women at the Saudi state-owned oil company Aramco in a mixed work environment with men. As part of an exchange program, she worked for a year at the American computer company EMC . During this time she also got her driver's license . She was increasingly bothered by the restrictions on women in her home country.

On May 19, 2011, after much preparation in the city of al-Chubar , she was filmed by her friend Wajeha al-Huwaider behind the wheel of a car and published the video on the Internet. On May 22, 2011, she was arrested for “inciting public opinion against the state”. Amnesty International requested her release. She was released conditionally on May 30, 2011. She had to leave Saudi Arabia after receiving death threats.

Since then she has been advocating the rights of women in the Islamic world around the world. She met the Dalai Lama , among others . Her book about her experiences at that time Daring to drive was published in 2017 in German translation under the title Losfahren .

She lives in Sydney . There she is married to a Brazilian for the second time and has a second son with him. After her divorce, she had to leave her first son with his father in Saudi Arabia and is only allowed to visit him occasionally. Her two children have never seen each other because their second son is refused entry to Saudi Arabia, as Manal al-Sharif's second marriage to a non-Saudi has not yet received the necessary approval from the Saudi government and the son is therefore not a Saudi one Owns nationality.

In September 2017, King Salman instructed the government to work out regulations according to which both men and women should be given driving licenses. A committee of several ministries should examine this; The regulations are to be implemented by June 2018 at the latest.

Awards

The American magazine Foreign Policy magazine named Manal al-Sharif one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers 2011.

Forbes named her one of the Women Who (Briefly) Rocked in 2011 .

In 2012 TIME Magazine named her among the 100 most influential people in the world.

Together with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei , she was one of the first recipients of the Oslo Freedom Forum's Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent .
