Wallington Hall

Wallington Hall is a country house surrounded by gardens, near the village of Cambo , about 19 km west of Morpeth in the English county of Northumberland . It has belonged to the National Trust since 1942 , after the owner at the time, Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan , gave it the first gift of its kind. English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

The property belonged to the Fenwick family from 1475 until their financial situation forced them to sell to the Blackett family . Sir William Blackett had the hall house rebuilt in 1688 around the old Peel Tower house . Sir Walter Blackett later had it rebuilt in major parts by architect Daniel Garret in the Palladian style before it fell to the Trevelyan family in 1777 . Sir Charles Trevelyan inherited the property in 1928 from his father, Sir George Otto Trevelyan .

After Pauline Jermyn married the naturalist Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan , the two began to invite people from literature and science to the house. Members of the Pre-Raphaelites were also guests at the cultural center that was Wallington Hall.

The National Trust also owns the property on which the house stands. The products from these farms, along with other agricultural products from the region, were sold in a farm shop on the property. However, this was closed in 2012.

description

Located in about 40 hectares of gently rolling parkland, the property also had a wooded valley, ornamental lakes, lawns and a recently renovated, enclosed garden.

In addition to the beautifully furnished interior, you can see the desk in Wallington Hall where Thomas Babington Macauley , brother-in-law of the dazzling Sir Charles Edward Trevellyan wrote his History of England , as well as a large collection of old dollhouses and eight murals by William Bell Scott in the lobby depicting the history of Northumberland.
