Walo (Corvey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walo († 1024 ) was Abbot of Corvey from 1011 to 1016 .

Life

He came from a noble family. During his tenure as abbot, there was a serious conflict with Bishop Meinwerk of Paderborn. He accused the members of the abbey of indiscipline and a dissolute lifestyle. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. One of Meinwerk's motivation may have been the aim of a confrontation to resolve the conflict between the diocese of Paderborn and Corvey over its independence in favor of Paderborn. On the basis of his accusations, Meinwerk wanted to make a visit to the abbey. For this purpose he traveled to Corvey. The abbot and monks refused to allow him to enter and intervene in inner-monastic affairs with reference to the imperial and papal privileges. Meinwerk caused Heinrich II to depose Walo and install Druthmar in his place . Most of the monks then left the monastery. Walo died eight years after his dismissal.
