Career

Walter Kuchler was already giving skiing lessons at the Bayerwald Ski School in the early 1950s. In 1952 the waiting exam followed and in 1959 the trainer examination at the German Ski Association (DSV), since 1964 he was a state-certified ski instructor. He studied philosophy, education and theology and received his doctorate in 1968 with a doctoral thesis on sports ethics at the Ruhr University in Bochum. The German Sports Association awarded him the Carl Diem Prize for the best work in sports science from 1964 to 1968 for this work. In the German Association for Ski Instruction, he was a member of the curriculum commission from 1966 to 1988. From 1969 to 1971 he was an academic advisor at the sports institute of the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1971 he was appointed institute director for sport at the University of Dortmund. Since the beginning of the eighties, Kuchler developed a ski technique that he called the diagonal technique and that became the basis of the carving technique. Since this technology, which is generally practiced today, was contrary to the official view of the time, it led to a rift with the management of the German Association for Ski Instruction. In 1994 he was instrumental in founding SPORTS - the association for winter sports as a leisure and health sport - which trains ski instructors for this sector. He was and is regularly involved in the theoretical and practical training of ski instructors, since 1994 mainly within the framework of SPORTS. As the largest ski test in the world, the annual ski test was described that for the magazine skiers , later Skimagazin was conducted from 1992 to 2004 under Walter Kuchler line and with which he accompanied the carving ski development of these years and influenced. By the beginning of 2017, Walter Kuchler had written over 22 books and brochures (not all of them are publicly available). Some of them have also appeared in foreign languages. He has also written numerous contributions to compilations and magazines, given lectures, edited instructional videos and participated in many radio and television programs.

Ski technology development

Walter Kuchler's first major ski publications were his methodology of skiing lessons published by the Bavarian Ski Association in 1963 and the theory volume (5) in the German ski curriculum (1972), for which he had developed a lesson in skiing. The ski equipment commonly used by casual skiers at the time consisted of slightly tapered skis with lengths well over the body size and ski boots with shafts or spoilers up to half the calf height. The ski technique and teaching methods presented in the 1972 ski curriculum were adapted to this. The aim of the lesson was the various forms of swing swing and parallel swing with high or low relief. In an appendix on the fundamentals of ski mechanics, Walter Kuchler had an employee analyze the momentum control by cutting, i.e. carving, technically and mechanically. He has already encouraged his sports students to take cut turns. The skis and boots of that time allowed garlands of cut turns at increased speed and not too steep terrain, which were triggered without up-and-down movement solely by knee guidance swinging across the direction of travel. In practically all other works and presentations, he remained true to the subject of his first ski publications: Development and dissemination of teaching and driving forms for young people, occasional and hobby skiers with a focus on

  • Quickly learnable basics for early driving pleasure
  • Body-friendly movements to avoid damage and consequential damage
  • Imaginatively modified forms of driving for driving pleasure and as an incentive to keep learning
  • Freedom to individual driving forms and individual driving style at all skill levels (development of an individual "motor personality")

His material developments, material tests and material recommendations also served these goals. Examples of this are his ski boot developments with the company LOWA, Jetzendorf, in the 1970s and 1980s, and the ski test carried out under his leadership and published in the SKILÄUFER and SKIMAGAZIN magazines, from which the ski audience and the carving ski manufacturers received important impulses. In the 1980s, Walter Kuchler developed a consistent ski technique, the diagonal technique, from turns with cross-coordination of arms and legs, which were occasionally propagated earlier, and which only made their real advantages for amateur skiers tangible with the widespread introduction of carving skis.

effect

With his dissertation on the sports ethos from 1969, Walter Kuchler showed his intention and his ability to open up new paths. The work is now an often cited classic in sports science. Through his many lectures, publications, and radio and television appearances, Walter Kuchler is one of the most important experts in ski instruction. His countless students spread his teaching methods and the forms of driving he developed and use them themselves as ski instructors and / or skiers. In November 2001 DIE ZEIT dedicated a full-page article to him as a pioneer of carving and an article in issue 14/2001 of ZEIT-ONLINE with the headline "Walter" the Carver "Kuchler".
