The Wanshan Islands or Ladrone Islands ( 萬 山 群島 (萬 山 羣島) / 万 山 群岛 , Wànshān Qúndǎo , Wan-shan Ch'ün-tao - "Ten Thousand Mountain Archipelago") are a Chinese group of islands in front of the mouth of the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) in Guangdong Province . They are located in the south and southwest of Hong Kong in the South China Sea . The archipelago consists of over 150 islands. Originally it was part of a mountain range on the mainland and was only later separated from the mainland due to the subsidence of the mountain range.
The islands are administered by Zhuhai in Guangdong Province, China .
