history

The three Göpelfelder represent the development of the settlement history of the municipality Wemmetsweiler, which arose from the three settlements Michelsberg , Wemmetsweiler and Zeisweiler . The Göpel itself points to the importance of the place as a junction of the Primstalbahn opened in 1879 and the Fischbachtalbahn .

The flaming sword attached is the attribute of the Archangel Michael , the patron saint of the parish church of St. Michael in Wemmetsweiler, the previous building of which is the oldest church in the community. The clearing hoe gives an indication of the emergence of Wemmetsweiler and Zeisweiler as clearing settlements .

The coat of arms was designed by local researcher Kurt Hoppstädter . The Saarland Ministry of the Interior approved the use of the coat of arms with a resolution of August 26, 1965. With the incorporation of Wemmetsweiler into the municipality of Merchweiler on January 1, 1974, the coat of arms lost its official validity.

In the coat of arms of the municipality of Merchweiler , which was newly adopted after the new formation of the municipality in November 1975 , the Göpel was adopted in confused colors.
