Standards for warning signs on machines and other technical devices

Many devices pose a risk. While it used to be assumed that these dangers were easily recognizable and that the handling of the devices was part of the general risk to life, today the manufacturer is responsible for warning of major dangers. As far as possible, he has to ensure structural safety. Warnings may only be given about residual dangers - through safety instructions in the technical documentation and, above all, with warning signs.

There are standards for warning signs that follow two different approaches:

  • The ANSI Z.535 assumes combination of text and image of one. This American approach has its limits in a multilingual environment like the European Union.
  • ISO 3864 , IEC 80416-1: 2001 , EN 80416 , EN 61310 and other standards therefore define warning symbols that can stand on their own if possible.

Other notes

Another common warning sign outside of public transport draws attention to a snappy dog. In a broader sense, the warning signs also include the hazard pictograms for hazardous substances as well as the labeling of hazardous goods.
