Warthaer gingerbread
Warthaer Pfefferkuchen ( Polish: Bardzkie Pierniki , Silesian Woarther Pfafferkucha ) were traditionally handcrafted gingerbread cookies in various varieties that came from the Lower Silesian pilgrimage site of Wartha (since 1945 Bardo ). In contrast to other gingerbread and honey cake variants, the Wartha recipe differed in that the basic dough was stored for a longer period and matured before baking.
The gingerbread tradition in Wartha lasted until 1464. With the expulsion of the Germans from Lower Silesia after 1945, this tradition was extinguished. An information board at the former Alois Hentschel bakery has been reminding of this tradition since August 2015 .
