The story is told by Hans-Ulrich Heiniger from the Emmental , on the shady side of the upper Wysssachengraben. Heiniger, who was born in Schwendihüttli on February 8, 1808, grew up in poor conditions because his ailing father as a clog maker only had a meager income. His mother had to support the family. In his youth he experienced famines in which he could only eat beets. As a casual worker, he also came into contact with alcohol and playing cards. When he started working for the local judge Wirth in Heimigen, he got to know a sense of duty and improved his way of life. He then married "Mareili", the neighbor's maid. The book also reports on his social advancement through a position as a schoolmaster to his work as an evangelist for the Evangelical Society in Bern and his suffering until shortly before his death on May 28, 1892. At the end of the book there is a description of Heiniger and a harvest of corn.

The book tells in simple words how Heiniger came to believe as a hypocrite, was called to be a schoolmaster and then worked as a poor carer and finally became an evangelist of the Evangelical Society in Bern . Heiniger also meets Anton Hippin, whose biography is known from Schlachte's book Meister Pippin . He was an avid evangelist and pastor who wrote 18,914 pastoral letters over the course of his life.
