The Washington DC Temple is the sixteenth temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . It was consecrated in 1974 and is located in Kensington, Maryland , making it the first temple east of the Mississippi since 1846. Before the consecration, it was open to the public from September 17 to November 2, 1974 and was visited by around 750,000 people during this time.

The temple was designed to resemble the Salt Lake Temple in order to be quickly identified as the Temple of Latter-day Saints. At 15,000 square feet, it is the third largest LDS temple. It has six endowment rooms and fourteen sealed rooms . The tallest of the six towers is 88 meters high and carries an angel Moroni . This is around six meters high and weighs two tons. Due to its location in a largely untouched forest, the temple gives the impression of being isolated. At the same time, it can be seen from a long distance from the busy motorway number 495 and is therefore a well-known landmark.
