The Washington Commandos were an arena football team from Fairfax, Virginia that played in the Arena Football League (AFL). In 1989, the Washington franchise moved to Maryland for one season, playing as the Maryland Commandos .
history
The Commandos were founded in 1987 and played their first season in 1987 in the AFL, which was established in the same year. The following year, the Commandos suspended their gaming operations for a year before returning in 1989 as the Maryland Commandos. Another year later, the franchise changed its name again to Washington Commandos. In 1990 the franchise dissolved.
Washington Commandos
The Washington Commandos played their home games at the Capital Center in Fairfax. The arena had space for 18,130 spectators, in which ice hockey and basketball were also played.
The first game in franchise history was lost on June 19, 1987 with 46:48 at the Pittsburgh Gladiators . In the end, the Commandos had two wins and four losses and missed the playoffs.
In 1988 the Commandos suspended their game operations.
Maryland Commandos
For the 1989 season, the franchise changed its name to Maryland Commandos. They also played at the Capital Center in Fairfax. The season ended with four losses and not a single win, missing the playoffs.
Return to the old name
In 1990, their franchise returned to its roots and adopted its original name again. The Commandos no longer played their home games in the Capital Center, but in the EagleBank Arena, which holds around 10,000 spectators. The season ended as disappointing as the previous one. In the end, Washington had two wins and six losses.
After the season, the Commandos were finally dissolved.
In 2002 media reported that there could be another indoor football franchise in DC in the foreseeable future. Even the team name was already known, the Washington Warriors, which was to be founded by the owner of the NFL team Washington Redskins . The plans could never be finally implemented.
It was not until 2016 that the area got another indoor football team, the Washington Valor started in the AFL.
