With the water pressure test according to EN 1610, newly created sewers can be checked for leaks. In Germany, the standard replaces the DIN standard DIN 4033 , which was withdrawn in October 1997 .

During the water pressure test, all openings of the sewer section to be tested are closed and filled with water free of air. The required test pressure is set with the help of a pressure measurement installed in the channel bottom and after a waiting time of usually one hour to saturate the pipe wall with water (only for cement materials ), the test can be started. The test pressure corresponds to the water pressure that results from the water column in the shaft up to the top of the shaft. It should be at least 0.1 bar and a maximum of 0.5 bar at the top of the pipe. The test section is tight if the addition of water, measured within half an hour and required to maintain the test pressure, does not exceed the specified values:

  • 0.15 l / m 2 pipe wall area for pipelines
  • 0.20 l / m 2 pipe wall surface for pipes with manholes
  • 0.40 l / m 2 pipe wall surface for manholes

The recurring leak test of old sewers is carried out with lower test pressures (around 0.05 bar). The maximum test pressure should not be more than 0.50 meters of water column. The permissible water losses correspond to the ATV leaflet M143 part 6.

A water pressure test to determine the permeability of rock is the Lugeon test or WD test (water pressure test, water pressure test).
