“Water kinetic plastic” on Ebertplatz , Cologne, July 2018

The water kinetic sculpture is a work of art by the German artist and metal sculptor Wolfgang Göddertz . The fountain sculpture is located in Cologne on Ebertplatz and is a large walk-in fountain made of stainless steel.

In 1969, the city of Cologne launched an artistic tender among Cologne artists to design Ebertplatz. The winning design comes from Wolfgang Göddertz, who at the time had his studio in an Art Nouveau villa right on the square. In the following year, Göddertz submitted his design for the silvery matt polished stainless steel fountain. In 1971 the decision was made to implement this design. It took six years before the fountain was inaugurated on September 2, 1977. The fountain is 9 meters high and 18 meters wide. It was named Monument of the Month for July by the Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection (RVDL). The fountain is popularly known as the nail fountain .

After the well's pumps froze twice, the well was no longer used as a well for many years. It was only put back into operation in summer 2018.
