Water column (hydrology)

Graphic representation, not to scale, of a water column in an ocean

A water column - primarily for exemplary or model representations - is a delimited body of water from the surface of a body of water to the bottom sediments. The physical, chemical and biological conditions and processes in this body of water are identified using descriptive and illustrative methods. An actual water column is represented in a direct way, especially with its transition in the sediment zone, e.g. B. for the interactions in floodplains.

In the descriptive representation of a water column, for example in streams, rivers, lakes or in the sea, physical parameters such as temperature , turbidity , density and salinity , chemical parameters such as pH value , nutrient and pollutant content and biological parameters such as occurrence of Microorganisms and macroorganisms used. On the water column model, model calculations of the vertical physical exchange processes are possible, in which the meteorological effects on the water surface can also be included (wind, solar radiation). These exchange processes and temperature changes are further calculated in terms of their effect on the microorganisms (especially plankton ). In comparison with measurement results, realistic calculation methods have been developed, which have now been developed from this initially spatially limited body of water into multi-dimensional model systems.

The development of three-dimensional ecosystem models makes it possible to simulate influences and to calculate developments in advance. a. Influences from climate change. With such a model, for example, the seasonal development of a zooplankton population in the North Sea can be simulated realistically.
