Water sports liability insurance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The water sports liability insurance or boat insurance is a liability insurance that covers personal, property and financial damage in water sports , which arise from the use of water sports equipment (for example boats or yachts ).

Damage caused to a third party in connection with the possession or use of one's own water sports equipment is not covered by regular private liability insurance, as this excludes damage in connection with (motorized) water sports equipment. Private liability insurance usually only covers damage caused by paddle boats, row boats and pedal boats.

The insurance cover not only applies to the owner, but also extends to those who are authorized or responsible for operating the device.

A flat rate of at least 5 million euros should be agreed as the sum insured. In the case of expensive boats, hull insurance can also be useful. The hull covers damage to your own boat, for example after a mast break or if it has capsized.

In Germany, liability insurance for the boat or yacht is not mandatory. In countries such as Italy , Switzerland or Spain, however, water sports liability insurance is one of the compulsory insurances with different minimum amounts of cover for the insured water sports equipment. If water sports equipment is used in these countries, proof of insurance must sometimes be carried on board. Around 50,000 water sports accidents occur every year in the EU.
