The water tower in Bremen-Walle was at times the largest water tower in Europe.

history

The tower was built in 1905 to supply the west of Bremen with drinking water with its capacity of 3,000 m³ . It was 61 meters high. The water tower, which stood in what was once Breslauer Strasse (today's Karl-Peters-Strasse ), was badly damaged by a bombing raid on the night of August 18-19, 1944, and was later demolished. Only its concrete base was ultimately preserved. In 2005 it was planned to build over the base as a foundation for a building with senior housing. The construction should be completed by 2008. So far, the base has not been built over.

In February 2016, the Bremer Heimstiftung announced the planned new construction of a seven-storey and - following the existing base - octagonal building from March 2016. The building with 42 apartments was completed at the beginning of 2018.

"Around the Walle Water Tower" is a cycling race that has been taking place since 2004.

The water tower on pictorial representations

The Waller water tower was painted by Franz Radziwill . In 1995 the Deutsche Bundespost issued a postage stamp showing the Steffensweg including the water tower according to Radziwill's illustration.
