The Eutin water tower is on the corner of Bismarckstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse. It was built in 1909 at the highest point in the city. At the same time the waterworks on Deefstieg (formerly Diebsteig) was built.
The construction
The 38 m high, round brick tower stands on a polygonal base. The windows and entrance portal have pointed arches. Green glazed roof tiles form the transition from the base to the narrower, conically tapering shaft. The substructure carries a riveted Intze 1 container. It holds 250 m³ of water and is broken through by an inner cylinder. A spiral staircase leads through the cylinder to the viewing platform. There are a total of 156 steps to the top.

The building is significantly widened in the area of the water tank. The water tower shows neo-Gothic elements in many details and is thus reminiscent of brick Gothic buildings : The cylindrical walling of the container ends with a crenellated wreath . Numerous blind niches, of which the smaller ones are plastered, structure the masonry. A copper-covered conical roof (originally tin-covered) completes the building at the top.
Todays use
The capacity of the water tank was no longer sufficient for the extended supply of the city in recent years. The tower only served to stabilize the pressure and was finally taken completely offline in 2006.
- Today the tower is open to visitors in the summer months and is used as a lookout tower. Visitors reach the area between the roof and the battlements via a spiral staircase that leads through the middle of the water tank.
- There are also regular exhibitions of contemporary art in the tower. Galleries and exhibition rooms are located on three floors. A permanent photo exhibition shows all the water towers in Schleswig-Holstein.
