The Hohenlockstedt water tower was built in 1901–1902. It served to supply the Lockstedter camp with water , a military training area on the Lockstedter Heide.
The construction
Oberbaurat Schmidt from Darmstadt designed and planned the building. The 17 m high shaft was bricked with red Hademarschen clinker. The container resting on it is provided with a circulation. The outer wall in the area of the container consists of a thin concrete jacket that is reinforced with wire mesh. The roof is covered with tar paper. The height above ground without the signal mast is 24.30 m. The water tank has a capacity of 125 m³. There is a water level indicator on the outside of the tower, which is controlled by a chain that is connected to the float in the tank.
The signal mast
A 9.50 m high signal mast is attached to the top of the tower. A spherical signal basket (warning balloon) could be raised or lowered with a wire rope spill. The raised warning balloon signaled that shooting outside of the location was taking place sharply.
The operation
The former pump house stands next to the tower. The two pumps housed in it were driven by a diesel engine. They sucked the water from four wells, but did not run continuously. When the water level indicator on the outside of the tower showed 20 m³, the pumps were switched on to refill the water tank.
Today's use
The water tower ceased operations in 1984 after a new waterworks took over supplying the community. The tower has been a listed building since 1983. The first renovation took place in 1985. The museum at the Hohenlockstedt water tower has been set up in the former pump house . In 2007 the tower was renovated and redesigned again. Windows have been installed in the water tank and the tower head cladding. Since then, the water tower can be used as a lookout tower. Civil weddings with a maximum of ten people present are also possible.
