The water tower

The water tower Königs Wusterhausen is a 33 meter high water tower on the Funkerberg in Königs Wusterhausen in the German state of Brandenburg . It served to supply the city with water from 1912 to 1965. Its integrated elevated tank had a capacity of 300 cubic meters of drinking water. The water tower is a listed building .

history

The water tower on the Funkerberg was built between 1910 and 1912 as a tower with a panoramic tour at a height of 33 meters. At that time, it represented an architectural specialty for this area and developed into a destination. After 1945 the water tower was operated by VEB (K) Stadtwerke Königs Wusterhausen. Due to insufficient maintenance and hygienic deficiencies, the tower ceased operations as a water supplier in 1965. A lack of financial resources and the lack of interest in the city tour at the time led to a slow but steady decline of the building. In 1980, at the urging of committed citizens of the city, it was put on the district monument list. This prevented further destruction of the tower. The tower was not open to the public until 1989. Funding was only made available in 1990. Together with funds from the state, the district and the city of Königs Wusterhausen as well as the monument protection authority, the tower was renovated. Since 1991 it has housed a restaurant, a gallery and a viewing platform open to the public, which can be reached by climbing a spiral staircase with 110 steps.

A tradition is now the "tower blowing" on Christmas Eve, where classic Christmas carols are played down from the tower by the trombone choir of the Königs Wusterhausen Kreuzkirche. Every year from 10 p.m., many listeners from the city, but also from the surrounding area and Berlin , enjoy the approximately one-hour event.
