The Malente water tower is located in the town of the same name in Schleswig-Holstein (Ringstrasse 25). It was built in 1912 as part of the expansion of the town at that time. In the short time between 1890 and 1910, the farming village had become an up-and-coming health resort that needed an efficient water supply.

Architecture and building history

The core of the water tower consists of a reinforced concrete structure . The exterior is faced with brick in the lower area , while the concrete is visible in the protruding tower head. The tower is 38 m high and has five floors. On the fifth floor there is a cylindrical water tank with a capacity of 142 m³.

The construction was carried out by the Lübeck construction company Glogner & Co. , whereby the master mason Friedrich Stammann was commissioned with the masonry work. In addition to the tower, the waterworks included two 13.7 m deep wells. In the lower part of the tower, an apartment for the water master was added, which was expanded in 1975 by an extension. The bay window on the west side of the tower was added to the tower at a later date. Modifications were necessary because in 1927 an additional water tank for water treatment had to be built into the tower.

In the years 1958/1959 the city built a water tank with a capacity of 1200 m³ with pressure pumps on the Godenberg . The water tower on the Ringstrasse lost its function. It was placed under monument protection in 1986 .

Redevelopment

Before the renovation in 2005, the tower showed cracks on the outer skin. The bay window threatened to sag and fall on the house. Inside, the reinforced concrete structure showed damage from rust blasting. The renovation took place with financial participation from the state.

Uses

In 2008 the building was largely unused, only the lower floors are inhabited. Various possible uses or a sale of the tower are discussed.
