The water tower of Tønder (German: Tondern) is a brickwork tower at the site Tøndermarsken short distance from the modern day town hall town Tønder in South Denmark . The tower was built in 1902 to provide the necessary water pressure resulting from the height of the tower for the water supply in the municipality of Tønder.

Building

The tower is 40 meters high and has a slight taper in the diameter of the rising part of the masonry. While the upper part of the water tower has a cylindrical shape. When the tower was used for the water supply, the upper body of the tower had a container with a maximum capacity of 250 m³ to absorb water. The tower structure was designed internally over seven floors. On the tapering lower tower shaft, windows were installed on two levels, one pair of windows each facing east-west and north-south. Above the roof of the tower, the spire was adorned with a metal weather vane with the words "1902", which was due to the year of construction of the tower as a decorative ornament, but served as a carrier for the top down conductor for lightning protection.

Decommissioning and conversion as a museum

After the closure as a water tower, it was decided to use it as a museum in the 1980s. A few years later, a charitable foundation, which goes back to AP Møller and HC Mc-Kinney Møller (Maersk), donated an amount equivalent to around 10 million euros for the renovation and rededication of the tower. Today it houses the Hans Wegner Museum, which was named after the local manufacturer of chair furniture and which illustrates the development of seating furniture with a collection of chair models that are without exception specially designed. Since the renovation and rededication of the water tower, the top of the tower has had a weather vane with the inscription "Museum".
