The Westerland railway water tower is a former water tower on the island of Sylt, which is now used as a residential building. It stands on the former railway site at Industrieweg 14.

Building

The cylindrical brick building has a height of 21.8 m. In the area of the water tank, it is only slightly wider than below. A polygonal tent roof with pan covering forms the end . Originally there were only two rings of small windows, one directly under the roof, another under the water tank. There were also a few narrow windows in the shaft. A Barkhausen tank with a capacity of 100 m³ was originally used to store water .

Original usage

The railway water tower was built in 1927 at the same time as the other railway facilities in Westerland. It was the year the Hindenburgdamm was completed . The tower was mainly used to supply water to the steam locomotives at the terminus of the march railway .

Decommissioning and further use

In 1984 the tower was finally shut down. In 1992 a buyer was found who had an apartment built. An application for extensions was not approved, but the windows could be enlarged. In addition, an additional ring of round windows could be installed above. The roof was re-covered and triangular dormer windows to illuminate the upper living area.
