Water tower on Viersener Strasse

The water tower on Viersener Straße , also known as the New Water Tower , is one of the landmarks of Mönchengladbach .

Object description

The water tower was completed in 1909 after two years of construction and inaugurated on November 14, 1909; the construction costs at the time were 216,000 marks . The tower has a height of 51  m and is located north of the city center on one of the main arterial roads to Viersen . It was built in Art Nouveau style according to the plans of the Mönchengladbach master builder Otto Greiß , who had the goal of making the tower the city's landmark. The water tower suffered no damage during World War II .

The stone face sculptures in the upper wreath of sculptures were made by the Mönchengladbach sculptor Emil Hollweg , who immortalized the then mayor Hermann Piecq and members of his family. Furthermore, a son of Piecq was shown in the city arms as Saint Vitus . The lower wreath of sculptures shows aquatic animals.

The water tower has two tanks for supplying drinking water to the city center and the northern districts of Mönchengladbach. The lower tank with a volume of around 2300 cubic meters supplies the lower lying areas of Mönchengladbach. The upper tank with a capacity of 800 cubic meters ensures the water supply for the upper town. In the construction of this water tower, the load of the upper water tank was not borne by additional support structures within the building, but solely by the outer walls.
