Wat Traphang Thong
The Wat Traphang Thong ( Thai วัด ตระพัง ทอง - Gold Sea Monastery ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) in Sukhothai , Sukhothai Province in the northern region of Thailand .
Wat Traphang Thong should not be confused with Wat Traphang Thong Lang ( วัด ตระพัง ทองหลาง ), which is a few kilometers further east.
location
Wat Traphang Thong is part of the Sukhothai Historical Park , it is located near the eastern city wall that surrounds the Old City (Mueang Kao - เมือง เก่า ) of Sukhothai. The eastern city gate, the "Kamphaeng-Hak" gate, is just a few meters east of the temple.
The temple itself is on an island in the middle of a lake. It can be reached via a pedestrian bridge from the main street.
Attractions
On buildings of historical interest, there is next to a chedi in Sinhala style nothing special. Eight smaller chedis are arranged around the large one. A simple ordination hall ( ubosot ) was donated in 1917 by a Sukhothai governor.
What makes this temple worth seeing is a Buddha's footprint , which is located in a (modern) mondop next to the chedi. It was brought here from the Khao Phra Bat Yai (Hill of the Great Footprint) , a temple in the mountains west of the city, in the mid-20th century . The footprint was created in 1359 from dark gray stone, as King Li Thai announced in a stone inscription (the so-called Inscription IV ). Its 108 auspicious symbols contain many associated with the mythological Mount Meru , the world mountain of the Buddhist universe.
particularities
Wat Traphang Thong is the only temple in the Old City that has an active monastic community.
