Wat Umong Suan Phutthatham ( Thai : วัด อุโมงค์ สวน พุทธ ธรรม , short name: Wat Umong , also: Wat U Mong - วัด อุโมงค์ ) is an approximately 700 year old Buddhist temple complex in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand .

Wat Umong is located on the Doi Suthep mountains south of Chiang Mai University .

According to legend, the temple was founded in the 1380s by King Kue Na . The temple fell into disuse since the end of the reign of King Tilokarat (ruled 1441–1487). It was not until 1948 that monks - disciples of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu - settled here again.

The temple is known for the fact that the monks who live here live in a very natural environment and occasionally feed the deer and other animals. Under the chedi there are tunnels with Buddhist images that are very easy to explore.

Fish and turtles can be fed by a small lake.

Wat Umong Suan Phutthatham is not to be confused with the temple with a similar name in the center of Chiang Mai: Wat Umong Maha Therachan .
